Founded in 1585 by Edwin Sandys, Archbishop of York, Hawkshead Grammar School provided free education in Latin, Greek, and sciences. This historic classroom interior prominently shows the rows of long wooden benches and desks, famously carved with the names of pupils—including the legendary Romantic poet William Wordsworth, who attended from 1779 to 1788.
