This historic illustration depicts a dandy or gentleman operating a pedestrian hobby horse, an early precursor to the modern bicycle. Dressed in a formal tailcoat and top hat, he propels the two-wheeled wooden vehicle forward by striding along a country road under the shade of a large tree. The background features another rider in the distance against a rolling rural landscape, beautifully capturing the short-lived Regency era craze for this innovative form of human-powered transport.
