Abbotsbury Castle was not a medieval fortress but an 18th-century mansion built in mock castle style in 1765 for Elizabeth, 1st Countess of Ilchester. It served as the coastal residence and Dower House for the Fox-Strangways family until it was completely destroyed by a catastrophic fire in February 1913.
