This historic monochrome topographical postcard captures a grand view of the inner courtyard at Durham Castle. The composition showcases the impressive stone masonry, the decorative battlements, and the prominent arched entrance gateway complete with a wide set of stone access steps. Originally founded in the 11th century under William the Conqueror to protect the northern border, this remarkable fortress has served as the historic seat of University College, Durham, since 1837.
