The salt marshes of the Ile de Ré have been a central part of the island's identity and economy since at least the 12th century, when they were first developed by local monks. Salt production reached its peak in the 19th century, with over 1,000 salt workers producing 30,000 tons of salt annually.
This is an unused standard size postcard. The publisher is M. Berjaud and the country of manufacture is France.
