This colourful aerial view captures a breathtaking perspective looking down from above the massive dome of St Peter's Basilica towards Piazza San Pietro in Rome, Italy. The prominent elliptical colonnade designed by Bernini encircles the central square and obelisk, extending down the broad Via della Conciliazione towards the River Tiber and Castel Sant'Angelo in the background. The composition provides a spectacular and detailed historic record of Vatican City architecture, ancient urban layout, and twentieth-century Italian tourism.
