London Postcard:Opening LCC Steamboat Service King Alfred Prince of Wales XT3594

This historic view captures the official opening of the London County Council steamboat service by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, the future King George V, in June 1905. The ceremony takes place onboard the paddle steamer King Alfred, prominently featuring dignataries in top hats gathered near the vessel's flags and lifebuoy ring. This municipal transit venture aimed to provide efficient commuter transport along the River Thames but ultimately proved short-lived, closing just a few years later due to heavy financial losses.
