London Postcard: Westminster Abbey, Poets' Corner Interior with Shakespeare Monument 1900's XT2011.

Poets' Corner is a world-famous section of the South Transept in Westminster Abbey, dedicated to the memory of Britain's most renowned poets, playwrights, and writers. The tradition of literary burial here began with Geoffrey Chaucer in 1400, though it was not until the burial of Edmund Spenser nearly 200 years later that the tradition of honoring literary notables was truly established. This specific view highlights the prominent monument to William Shakespeare, which was unveiled in 1740 over 120 years after his death, featuring a figure of the poet placed on a pedestal resembling an altar.
