Railway Postcard: The Terrible Sharnbrook Midland Railway Disaster Wreckage 1909 - MB1074.
The image captures the aftermath of the "Terrible Sharnbrook Accident," a violent head-on collision that occurred on the Midland Railway near Bedford on February 4, 1909. An express goods train traveling from Manchester to London at approximately 50 miles per hour slammed into a stationary goods service due to a signaling error. The disaster resulted in the deaths of driver Arthur Coope and fireman John Hawley, whose portraits are featured prominently in the memorial montage alongside scenes of the mangled wreckage.
