Warwickshire Postcard:Birmingham Royal Visit Gas Department Triumphal ArchXT5071

This historic monochrome view captures the impressive illuminated triumphal arch erected by the Gas Department on 7th July 1909 to celebrate the royal visit of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. A large crowd of Edwardian onlookers fills the street beneath the ornate structure, which features massive pillars, detailed gas light fittings, floral garlands, and a central banner reading "Welcome to Birmingham". The event marked the grand opening of the new University of Birmingham buildings at Edgbaston by the King.
